Madeira Wine
The origins of Madeira Wine date back almost to the time of the island’s discovery (1419). It is a high-quality, world-renowned product, the most important in the region’s economy.
Madeira Wine is a wine that suits every occasion, although it is particularly nice when served as an apéritif or as a dessert or after-dinner wine. Tinta Negra Mole, Sercial, Verdelho, Boal and Malvasia are the grape varieties from which Madeira Wine is produced.
Poncha
A very popular drink among local people and tourists, poncha is a typical Madeiran cocktail made with aguardente (rum made from sugar-cane), honey and lemon juice. It is prepared with the help of a mexelote, a muddler (also known as poncha stick).
Some say it is from Indian origin and that it was introduced in Madeira by the British in the mid-18th century, since they travelled frequently between these two parts of the world.
Pé de Cabra
This traditional alcoholic beverage comes from the highlands of Câmara de Lobos. It is prepared with wine, stout, sugar, powdered chocolate and lemon zest.
Nikita
One of the most popular drinks on the island, prepared with vanilla ice cream, sugar, pineapple slices and an alcoholic beverage that can be either white wine or light beer.
Cider
This fermented beverage made from apple juice is also very popular in Madeira, particularly in the parish of Santo António da Serra.
