Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias

Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias

Located in the centre of Funchal, the Town Hall had the theatre built with the purpose of having a permanent and appropriate venue for the many shows and performances that took place on the island.

At the time of its inauguration, in 1888, it was called Teatro D. Maria Pia in honour of the queen and wife of the reigning King Luis I. With the Republic came the designation Teatro Funchalense and then that of Teatro Manuel Arriaga, to pay homage to a former member of parliament for Madeira and first President of the Portuguese Republic. Lastly, it was named Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias, after the Madeiran playwright, the name it retains until this day.
