Jardim Princesa D. Maria Amélia

Jardim Princesa D. Maria Amélia

Area: 5,000 square metres

This garden is part of the estate purchased by D. Amélia, the widow of Pedro IV, king of Portugal and first Emperor of Brazil, to build a tuberculosis hospital for the poor. It now houses a care home for elderly people, a kindergarten and a comprehensive school.

It is located at Avenida do Infante, facing Parque de Santa Catarina. Its proximity to the centre of the city in no way disturbs the peacefulness and tranquility that pervades it. Its many flower beds are in full bloom in spring and summer.

Another interesting feature is the garden’s pathways, paved with basalt cobbles brought from the shores of Madeira and decorated with intricate designs made with small pebbles.
