Casinhas de Santana

The traditional houses of Santana, triangular and with a thatched roof, are one of Madeira’s main tourist attractions.

These cottages consisted of an attic to keep farm products and a ground floor used as living quarters.

The origin of these cottages seems to be linked to the lack of stone in the region and to the fact that they are fresh in summer and warm in winter.
