Fortaleza de Santiago

Fortaleza de Santiago was built to defend the city’s beachfront and bay from pirate attack, together with the fortresses and strongholds that were already in place.

Its building was completed in 1654, and an extension was made in the mid-18th century.

Fortaleza de Santiago kept its military vocation until 1992.
