IVBAM ? Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute

The Instituto do Vinho, do Bordado e do Artesanato da Madeira (Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute) is the result of a fusion between the Instituto do Vinho da Madeira (Madeira Wine Institute) and  Instituto do Bordado, Tapeçarias e Artesanato da Madeira (Madeira Embroidery, Tapestries and Handicrafts Institute).

The institute is housed where once was the Madeira Embroidery Industry Trade Association, inaugurated in 1958. In its museum, locals and foreign visitors get in touch with some of the most relevant examples of regional handicraft and learn about its development over the centuries. Its main interests include a set of inlaid wood pieces from the mid-20th century, wickerwork, tapestries and a Madeira Embroidery collection with pieces dating from the second half of the 19th century to the 1950’s and 1960’s. There are also some examples of contemporary embroidery.
