Fortaleza do Ilhéu

Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, also known as Fortaleza do Ilhéu, was built on one of the islets that exist in the bay of Funchal, in the first half of the 17th century. The construction was interrupted due to financial constraints, but was soon resumed given the site’s strategic relevance in shipping control.

After the restructuring of the city’s harbour, Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Conceição gradually lost its importance in the control of marine navigation and served as signal station, thank you post for gun salutes and lighthouse.

In the 20th century, more exactly in 1992, the Regional Government put it to a different use.
